“One of you will betray me,”
The accusation came;
And all around the table,
Each disciple asked the same:
“Is it I, Lord?
Am I the one who dares
Betray the one true friend I have
Who shows He really cares?”
“Is it I, Lord?
Am I the kind who could
Consider turning back on one
Who for me had done such good?”
“Is it I, Lord?
Am I the traitor who reveals,
Delivering to the enemy one
Who had me following at his heels?”
“Is it I, Lord?
Am I deserting in time of need,
Refusing to give my heart in full
To the One whom I should heed?”
“Is it I, Lord?
Am I the one who violates
The confidence given in love
By Him who opens Heaven’s gates?”
“Is it I, Lord?
Will I prove false to your cause
After witnessing Your works
Which defied nature’s laws?”
“ Is it I, Lord?”
The twelve searched for treachery to deny.
Were the charge to us be made today,
God help the answer not be “I.”
