“Then his father, Zechariah, was filled with the Holy Spirit and gave this prophecy: ‘Praise the LORD, the God of Israel, for he has come to visit his people and has redeemed them. He is sending us a Mighty Savior from the royal line of his servant David, just as he promised through his holy prophets long ago— someone to save us from our enemies, from all who hate us.’”  – Luke 1:67-71

John the Baptist’s father prophesied that someone from David’s line would save Israel from their (physical) enemies. This has, obviously, not yet occurred. But it will happen, just as it has been written, along with the rest of the prophecies in this book (including Israel’s spiritual salvation). Who is that Savior? The next chapter tells us.

Israel’s rejection of the Savior at his first coming does not negate the future fulfillment of Zechariah’s prophecy. As Israel’s enemies increase, so does the time decrease till he saves Israel from those that hate them. But he doesn’t stop with their physical salvation. Instead, he’s coming again to replace “the heart of stone with a heart of flesh” of those who remain. But it won’t happen until Israel says—as a people—“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD.“
