Reading Luke 7:36-50 today. It’s the story of the woman who washed Jesus’ feet with her tears and her hair. The woman is described as an immoral woman. She is the kind who you might not want to touch you. Note the Pharisee’s comment.

“If this man were a prophet He would know who and what sort of person this woman is who is touching Him that she is a sinner (immoral woman).”

Jesus tells about the moneylender who had two debtors. One owed him 500 days pay. The other owed 50 days pay. He forgave both. Who was more grateful?  Of course the one who was forgiven the most.

All the things this woman did for Jesus

  1. Wet His feet with her tears
  2. Wiped them with her hair
  3. Kissed His feet continuously
  4. Anointed His feet with perfume.

Jesus says to those who are criticizing her “…For this reason I say to you, her sins, which are many, have been forgiven, for she loved much; but he who is forgiven little, loves little.”

Jesus’ message to the woman

“Your sins have been forgiven. Your faith has saved you; go in peace. “

This reminded me of Isaiah 1:18

“Come now, and let us reason together, “ says the Lord,

Though your sins be as scarlet,

They shall be as white as snow;

Though they are red like crimson

They will be like wool.

Did you see what saved the woman?

It was her faith in Jesus. Jesus has the power to forgive our sins.

A note on the words scarlet and crimson. These are colorfast stains. Stains that cannot be removed. Yet, Jesus has the power and the desire to forgive and cleanse the toughest of sins.

Do you believe He can do this?
