Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.

Paul’s desire for the Colossian Christians was that they would grow in Christ. In 2 Peter 3:18 tells us that we must “grow in the grace and knowledge of the Lord Jesus.” But, growing in Christ does not come automatically. WE must desire to grow. I think some of think, and I am being facetious, that after we have made good confession and were baptized into Christ for the forgiveness of our sins; that we went home, put a Bible under our pillow and woke up knowing all we needed to know.  But sadly, it does not work that way.  But as I said earlier, if we so desire, God will help us grow in Jesus.

WE ARE CALLED TO BE GROUNDED:” Colossians 2:6-7. In order to mature in our walk with Christ, we must be nourished by the source of life, Jesus Himself.  We must seek to “rooted” in the faith. We must know what we believe in and why. In John 15:4-7, our Lord instructed His disciples to “remain” in Him. Like the Colossians, our faith must continue. We must continue to grow in Jesus all of our spiritual life. If we stay the course, continuing to build upon our faith, we will draw nearer to the Lord Jesus. Remember, we are saved individually, but now we are in a corporate body of Christians.

WE ARE CALLED TO BE GROWING: Colossians 2:7

Paul continues to instruct the Colossian Christians in their walk with Jesus. If we are rooted in Christ, we grow in intimacy with Him and his people as “living stones” who are “being built” into a “spiritual house” (I Peter 2:5). The main reason for God’s desire for us to grow in Him is that we might ever draw closer to Him! We must always abound in thanksgiving. We can do this if we draw near to Him and live our faith in Jesus daily!
