“Best be the tie that binds
Our hearts in Christian love;
The fellowship of kindred minds
Is like to that above.”
-John Fawcett
The Psalmist said: “I am a companion of all them that fear thee, and of all them that observe thy precepts.” (Ps. 119:63) The. Progress of your Christian life will be greatly influenced by your associates. Many, who begin well fail just here (Jas. 4:4). “Be not deceived: Evil companionships corrupt good morals.” (1 Cor. 15:33)
Friendships are built upon common ideals and interests. Hence the greatest car should be exercised in choosing your friends. They should be those who will lift you up—those who are Christians also. This principle applies especially in the choosing of a life partner, for the Lord has plainly said: “Be not unequally yoked together with unbelievers; for what fellowship have unrighteousness and iniquity? Or what communion hath light with darkness?” (2 Cor. 6:14; See also 1 Cor. 7:39) Much unhappiness and tragedy can be averted by obeying this command of the Lord.
That which you take for yourself contrary to the Lord’s will can never bring you any real happiness. God recognizes the need of the human heart for friendship and can lead you to those who will prove to be true friends. “No good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.” (Ps. 84:11)
Do not limit your friends to a small clannish circle. Show special consideration to the person who is inclined to be “left out” by others. The more friends you have the richer your own life will be.
