  • Background –
  • Beginning of this church is 2nd Missionary Journey of Paul with Timothy and Silas from Acts 17:1-9
  • Members included mostly Gentiles and Jason (Acts 7:9) and Aristarchus and Secundus (Acts 20:4)
  • Harbor-
    • Capital and Largest city of Roman Province of Macedonia, located on Egnatia Way (Via Egnatia), A major road to the Eastern Provinces, city served as a center of trade and commerce. Thessaloniki or Salonica in Greece.
    • Many think Paul’s First Epistle written in Corinthians on his second missionary journey ± 52 AD
    • Paul mentions second coming of Jesus Christ in end of each chapter in 1 Thessalonians

 

Very Personal Matters Between Paul and Believers

1-5                   Timothy’s Mission                 

2:17-20            Much effort and thought given to Believers

  • Believers described as glory and joy

V.1.                  Therefore, wherefore, so when we could no longer stand it –

  • Left along in Athens
  • Paid to send Timothy

 V.2.                 Timothy –

                                    Described as:

  • Brother
  • God’s fellow worker

Purpose:

  • Strengthen/Establish weak – strong
  • Encourage you in faith

V.3.                  Moved-

  • Only place this work used in scripture
  • Dog wagging his tail
  • Unsettled / Shaken by trials
  • Knowledge of destiny of trials
  • Shaken – like a dog’s tail

V.4.                  Repeatedly told them they would be persecuted and were and then knew it well Hebrews 11:35-38 examples maybe suffering is under God’s Control.  We are told we will suffer because Jusus suffered.

V.5.                  Same As V.1. Except I Not We

  • Therefore, wherefore, so when I could no longer stand it

What could Paul not stand/endure

  • Faith would fail from persecution and Satan’s temptation

Purposes

  • establish & encourage them in their faith
  • Learn condition of faith

6-10                 Timothy’s Report

V.6.                  Contrast to earlier concerns.  Good tidings/news about believers’ faith and love.  Faith encouraged by others – I’m amazed at others service to kingdom.  Memories of us and longing to be together again.

V.7.                  Paul’s faith encouraged by affection, distress, persecution of Believer’s faith

V.8.                  Live because of standing firm in Lord

V.9.                  How can we thank God enough for you?

  • Overflowed Thanksgiving

V.10.                Pauls’ Prayer for Believer’s night and day

  • Earnestly/Exceedingly – real intense desire to visit together
  • Purpose to supply what is lacking in your faith
