A Hymn a Day (Graham McKay)
Guide Me O Thou Great Jehovah (1745)
- Words: William Williams (1717-1791)
- Music: John Hughes (1873-1932)
“For this God is our God for ever and ever; He will be our guide even to the end.” (Psalm 48:14)
Every generation must seek divine guidance, or it will certainly go astray> There was a great revival movement that swept across Wales during the 18th century. Howell Harris was a young Welsh preacher who used strong evangelistic sermons and congregational singing to reach many people. One, who was touched by Harris’ ministry, was William Williams. Williams was only 20 years old and was already preparing to become a medical doctor. At age 2o he changed directions and became a minister. He spent the next 45 years covering his native land by horseback (100,000 miles), his approach was preaching and singing the gospel in his native tongue. He was such a good singer people called him, “The Sweet Singer of Wales.”
This hymn takes the imagery from the march of Israel from Egypt to Canaan. Examine the song for songs of God’s constant provisions…like water, bread, fire, and calmness.
Prayer Focus: Read or reflect upon the Exodus and then talk to Jehovah who still guides.
