C.H. Spurgeon once said, “Faith and works are bound up in the same bundle. He that obeys God trusts God; and he that trusts God obeys God. He that is without faith is without works; and he that is without works is without faith.”
The Prince of Preachers was echoing the words of the Lord’s brother James. James teaches us that faith without works is dead. The idea that faith produces actions is not more clearly illustrated than it is in Peter’s experience walking on water. Peter trusted Jesus. Peter’s trust was proven by his willingness to get out of the boat. His faith gave way to obedience to Jesus. Much like a child jumping off the sofa towards their parents, shouting “Catch me,” should be the trust of the Christian. The child believes and trusts the parent, and so the child jumps. The Christian believed and trusted the Christ, and so he got out of the boat. How about you – are you\ trusting Jesus? Does your trust produce works?
