The Closing of Locust Street Church of Christ (Johnson City, TN) –
The Locust Street Church of Christ in Johnson City, TN closed February 25, 2018. To say the least, it was a very sad occasion. The church began February 1926 and closed February 2018. May the Lord be praised for the 92 years of witness for His name. Some members have lived here all their lives and this is the only church they were ever a member. It is not known the total number of souls won for the Lord, nor the number of lives strengthened and encouraged in their walk of faith. The church had struggled with the decision for several years. It was on the market for about 18 months. The smaller churches that wanted it could not afford it and the larger churches didn’t need it. But the Lord provided a buyer in a most miraculous way. The congregation had long been strong in supporting missions. In closing the church gave generously to 28 different missions, some local, some in the United States and some foreign. The congregation rejoices in this final activity to be able to give support to so many works of the Lord.
The 26th CHRISTIAN CRUSADE FOR CHRIST is now history. And what a blessing it was to those in attendance! The fellowship in the Word was inspiring. The topic of salvation was examined looking into it being needed, it being born out of love, it making us responsible to share the gospel, it making us a peculiar people and it making us chose to receive or reject it. The fellowship was enriched by spending time with each of the five speakers, Frank Preston, Sonny Childs, Joe Stone, Bennie Hill, and Joel Johnson. Adding to the blessing was time spent with other Louisiana preachers such as John Fulda, David Ramsey, and Donnie McGee. A special treat was to visit Bro. Cleo Russell who remains in a Nursing Home in Hammond Talk of the Crusade brought smiles to his face. And, what sweet fellowship was had with the brothers and sisters of the Oak Grove Church of Christ who sponsored the event. A special “Thank-you!” to Dale Ziebarth who ministers at Oakdale. Also to Craig Lotts (Dale’s brother-in-law) who provided the main course for each evening – Barbecue, Gumbo, Jumbali, and Fish as well as the ladies who filled in bountifully with sides, desserts, and drinks. What a week of blessings, a foretaste of heaven!!!
