What Others Are Saying

by Compiled by Bennie Hill

Last week’s Supreme Court approval of same sex marriages is a culmination of very radical cultural and legal changes in our country.  As stated by Bob Russell, former minister of the Southeast Christian Church in Louisville, “The endorsement of same-sex marriages dramatically underscores the moral freefall that has been taking place in our country.  Behavior that is labeled detestable in the Bible and was deemed illegal just a few decades ago is now hailed as loving and healthy.  Woe to those who call evil good and good evil.”  (Isaiah 5:20)  The hubristic decision by the Supreme Court to override the votes of the people in thirty one states demonstrates that the constitutional republic that was established in 1789 is no longer functioning as intended.”  Judge Anotonin Scalia wrote in the dissenting opinion “A system of government that makes the people subordinate to a committee of nine unelected judges does not deserve to be called a democracy.”

Though both the cultural and legal landscapes in our country have changed, there is much that has not changed.  As noted by Dr. David Reagan: “The God of this universe is the One who created and defined marriage as a union between one man and one woman, and no one has the authority to change that definition

Matthew 19:4,5  “Haven’t you read,”   he replied, “that at the beginning the Creator made them male and female, and said, “For this reason a man will leave  his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become flesh.  So they are no longer two but one.  Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate.”

God’s Word made it crystal clear that homosexuality is an abomination in God’s sight and its practice is sufficient to preclude one from the kingdom of God.

I Corinthians 6:9-11  “do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God?  Do not be deceived, neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers will inherit the kingdom of God. And that is what some of you were.  But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.”

Dr. Reagan goes on to say that the first chapters of the book of Romans state that a society’s acceptance of homosexuality is a sign that it is under the judgment of God and begging for destruction. (vs. 18-32)

Dr. Mohler, president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, assures us that “our Christian responsibility has not changed.   We are charged to uphold marriage as the union of a man and a woman and to speak the truth in love.  We are also commanded to uphold the truth about marriage in our own lives, in our own marriage, in our own families, and in our own churches.  We are called to be the people of the truth even when the truth is not popular and when the truth is denied by the culture around us…God’s truth has not changed. The Holy Scriptures have not changed.  The gospel of Jesus Christ has not changed. The church’s mission has not changed.  Jesus Christ is “the same yesterday, today and forever.”

Let me close by stating Dr. Reagan, “We can be assured that there will now be an all-out assault on Christians by the Gay Mafia as they attempt to force us to violate our Biblical beliefs.   They will confront all Christian businesses that participate in any way in marriage ceremonies, they will insist that ministers perform their marriage rites and they will demand that churches host their weddings. And when churches and ministers refuse there will be a demand for them to be stripped of tax exemptions and benefits (like the housing allowance for pastors).  And you can also be assured that ultimately there will be attempts to make even anti-gay speech, including sermons, illegal as “hate crimes.”

For us as Christians, we cannot be silent. We can and will have more opportunities to speak out on our position, to tell others where we stand and what we believe.    We can and must also pray for our nation, for our leaders and for the lost.

If my people who are called by my name will humble themselves, and pray and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.  (2 Chronicles 7:14)
