Those who have studied such things tell us that a bird can go 9 days without food, a dog 90 days, a turtle 500 days, a snake 800, a fish 1000 and some insects 12,000 days! For a man, 6 weeks is the maximum.

Most of us have never known real hunger. Our unique problem, rather, is that most of us eat too much, not too little, and often what we eat is not what we should eat. It is terribly saddening to know of others in our world who are starving. But the saddest fact is that many more are starving spiritually. Indeed, the body may be well-fed, while the soul is famished.

Souls starve when they are not being properly fed. Some have no appetite for true “soul food”. Others are feeding upon the husks of religions and philosophies that promise much but deliver little. In either case, the result will be spiritual death.

Feed your soul on Jesus Christ. He is “the living bread which came down from heaven. If any man eat of this bread he shall live forever” (John 6:51 ). We partake of Him only through faith and obedience to His word. Jesus declared that man cannot truly and fully live by “bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4 ).

Is your soul hungry? Are you eating? The preaching and teaching of God’s word is essential to the spiritual diet. Within the Bible is “milk” for the babes in Christ and “meat” for the more mature (1 Peter 2:2 ; Hebrews 5:12-14 ). Human traditions, opinions and philosophies fall far short of meeting the spiritual needs of man. When God’s word is set aside, then is fulfilled the word of God spoken through the prophet Joel: “I will send famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord” (Joel 8:11 ). Is your soul hungry? Are you eating? Feed upon His word, and these words of Jesus will be fulfilled in your life: “Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled” Matthew 5:6 ). –Ron
