A Call For Prayer

by Ron Bartanen

“I exhort, therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men: for kings, and for all that are in authority, that ye may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty” (1 Timothy 2:1-2).

It’s easy to criticize our elected officials, especially if they fail to measure up to our convictions.  This is not, in itself, an evil thing.  However, from reports I’ve seen, there is an increase in vile speech and violence in the political arena.  Such is usually unfruitful, and results in increased divisiveness within a nation, and  Jesus said, “Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation” (Matthew 12:25b).  Surely there is a more amiable way to bless a nation.  I would suggest that all families and individuals give special prayers for the well being of our nation, and a spirit of revival—all in accordance with the following admonition from the LORD:

“If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and heal their land” (2 Chronicles 7:14).

We need to pray that more will remember the Christian roots of our nation, and seek the restoration of the ideals upon which we were established.  I am tired of people saying we are not a Christian nation. By this they mean that Christian principles may now be ignored.  We need more who will say in effect what President Calvin Coolidge said when he began his presidency:

“Here stands our country, an example of tranquility at home, a patron of tranquility abroad.  Here stands its Government, aware of its insight but obedient to its conscience.  Here it will continue to stand, seeking peace and prosperity…attentive to the intuitive counsel of womanhood, encouraging education, desiring the advancement of religion, supporting the cause of justice and honor among the nations.  America seeks no earthly empire built on blood and force.  No ambition, no temptation, lures her to thought of foreign dominions.  The legions which she sends forth are armed, not with the sword, but with the cross.  The higher state to which she seeks the allegiance of all mankind is not of human, but of divine origin.  She cherishes no purpose save to merit the favor of Almighty God” (Inaugural Address, 1925; emphasis added).

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.
