As It Was In The Days Of Noah

Does the Bible reveal that society in general across our planet, will continue to disintegrate, decline morally as we approach the 2nd coming of Jesus Christ?  Sadly, yes!  It is written in First Timothy 4:1 “The spirit clearly says that in the later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons.”  So, apostasy will continue to accelerate, those who abandon the Christian faith.  And the most probable reason for this apostasy?  The answer is in Matthew 24:12 “Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold.”  From Second Timothy 3:1 “But mark this:  There will be terrible times in these last days.”  Verses 2-5 is a litany of moral degradation from “lovers of themselves” to “having a form of godliness but denying its power.”  As Dr. David Reagan points out regarding widespread society “will be characterized by three loves: “love of self(humanism), “love of money” (materialism) and love of hedonism” (pleasure).

A form of godliness meaning only in external appearances makes it all the more sinister and Satanically inspired.  True, since sin came into the world these attitudes have prevailed.  However, there continues to be an intensification, now with billions of people of every ethnicity, language and culture across continents as indicated in Second Timothy 3:13 “while evil men and imposters will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.”  Why is it that so many reject the gospel of Jesus Christ?  The answer in Second Corinthians 4:4 “The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers. so, that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Jesus Christ, who is the image of God.”  Notice Jesus Christ is the image or physical likeness of God who is spirit.  Jesus Christ is deity (God) in physical, bodily form.  And the god of this evil age is Satan.  Instead of seekers of God, unbelievers pursue their own carnal desires, and have unknowingly made the devil their god.

The diabolic climax of evil will be the embodiment of the devil, a beast of a man on the inside, the final antichrist.  Coming from Revelation 13:5-8 “The beast was given a mouth to utter proud words and blasphemies, and to exercise his authority for 42 months.  He opened his mouth to blaspheme God, and to slander his name and his dwelling place, and those who live in heaven.  He was given power to make war against the saints and to conquer them.  And he was given authority over every tribe, people, language and nation.  All the inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast – all whose names have not been written in the book of life belonging to the Lamb that was slain from the creation of the world.”

Notice “beast was given” three powers.  Given by who?  God!  So, God remains utterly in sovereign control through the terrible time, limited to 42 months or the 3 ½ years or 1260 days of the Great Tribulation, the Great Distress also known as the last part of “Jacob’s Trouble” in Jeremiah 30:7.  Also the last half of the 70th week of Daniel as described in Daniel 7:25 “The beast will make war against and conquer the saints.”  We believe here as Pretribulation, Premillennialists that this refers to tribulation saints only, that come to faith in Christ Jesus during that horrific time.  The church’s saints having already been raptured.

So, why is all of this important to us in the church who believe we will not be on earth at this time – raptured, caught up to heaven before this terrible time?  Two main reasons:  First we ourselves must persevere in the faith, no matter what circumstances or conditions prevail around us today as so many are committing apostasy, falling away from the faith.  Second do we know people – family or friends who are still not in Christ?  They are living as it is sometimes called on borrowed time.  Time is shorter today than yesterday when the Lord Jesus Christ will return in the air to catch up his church.  Unbelievers are all left behind, those in apostasy are left behind to face horror of horrors.  Possible conversion during the tribulation, the great distress, will also mean probable martyrdom, which will mean even stronger faith to die for!

How close are we to the coming of the Lord?  Dr. David Reagan shares this regarding a godly prophesy teacher.  “He was 80 years old and had been preaching about Bible prophecy for 60 years.  I’ll never forget how he began his message at a prophecy conference, he said: “I have been speaking on the signs of the times for 60 years.  When I began, the signs were few and far between.  Today, they are everywhere!  In fact, they are so abundant, I am on longer looking for signs, I am listening for sounds – the shout of an archangel and the blowing of a great trumpet.”

That will preach and should excite us!  Consider Matthew 24:37 “As it was in the days of Noah, so will it be at the coming of the Son of Man.”  Well how was it in the days of Noah exactly as referred to here?  The answer in Genesis 6:5 “The Lord saw how great man’s wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time.”  That sums op society today!  But today man on earth is well into the billions, think of the quantitative wickedness to the nth degree exponentially!  Plus, we believe the church, the saints will have been removed from this earth before the Great Distress (tribulation) begins.  At least in Noah’s day 8 believers were still on the earth when the global flood hit, which was God’s judgement on mankind in Noah’s day.  And the great distress of tribulation yet future (Daniels 70th week) will be worse than the global flood that killed everything on earth that had breath in it except those on the ark.  Really?  Consider from Matthew 24:21 when Jesus stated “For then there will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now – and never to be equaled again!”

Therefore, worse than the global flood!  And there’s more similarity with Noah’s day to today.  In Matthew 24:38 “For in the days before the flood people were eating, drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark.”  What does this suggest?  Apathy, the people of Noah’s day ignored Noah’s preaching of coming judgement, instead they went about their regular everyday pursuits of eating, drinking and marrying, etc. without believing of heeding the warnings to repent, or to believe, in fact consider from verse 39 “and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away.  That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.  That is the second coming of Jesus Christ to judge!  That is exactly like today!  Are we warning anyone?  Think of it this way, we can at least share these truths and plant the seeds so that if they don’t believe and repent during the church age – at least they may accept the Lord during the tribulation.  As bad as the tribulation will be – an eternity in the lake of fire is far, far worse.  But people just don’t believe any of this or if they do to some extent don’t believe time is short.
