A Society At It’s Worst

by R. J. Evans

It has been disheartening to see what has happened in this country over the past  years.  Morals have been declining at a rapid pace.  We have now reached the point where the majority (59%) of Americans give their approval to homosexual, same-sex “marriage”.  Our president supports it, the attorney general and a number of federal judges are in favor of it – some are overturning decisions where it is banned.  Many want to make heroes out of celebrities and athletes who have “come out of the closet” concerning this issue.  I am afraid that it will not be too long before our government attempts to force preachers to perform “marriage” ceremonies for same-sex couples. Businesses will be forced to provide their services for these “weddings” such as: wedding chapels, caterers, photographers, bakers, florists, etc.  In fact, situations like these are already happening in some  parts  of  the country.

It is “politically incorrect” to speak out against such sinful, deviant behavior as homosexuality.  But regardless of what men think, or what laws they may pass – the God of heaven still says that it is a sinful abomination.  See Leviticus 18:22 and 20:13.  In the New Testament it is strongly condemned in such passages as Romans  1:26-28; I Corinthians 6:9-10 and I Timothy 1:9-10. God did not create us for same-sex “marriage” – it violates God’s design for compatibility, natural desire and reproduction, Genesis 2:18-23; 1:27-28. From the very beginning, God instituted marriage between a man and woman –  “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh”,  Genesis 2:24; Matthew 19:1-10.

Homosexuality was the sin that brought on the destruction of the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah during the days of Lot, Genesis 19.  The Lord told Abraham that the outcry against these cities is great and “their sin is very grievous”,  Genesis 18:20.  The men of Sodom, both old and young, surrounded the house of Lot and said to him, “Where are the men who came to you tonight?  Bring them out to us that we may know them carnally”,  Genesis 19: 4-5.  The “filthy conduct” of these men tormented Lot’s “righteous soul from day to day by seeing and hearing their lawless deeds”,  II Peter 2:7-8. The terms “Sodomy” or “Sodomites” , I Corinthians 6:9; I Timothy 1:9-10, relate to this sin as it can be traced back to what happened during the days of Lot when ten righteous people could not be found, and the cities were destroyed by the Lord with fire and brimstone.

Thus, Sodom became a biblical type of human society at its worst.  Later Moses compared Israel’s future idolatry to Sodom and Gomorrah:  “So that the coming generation of your children who rise up after you, and the foreigner who comes from a far land, would say, when they see the plagues of that land and the sicknesses which the Lord has laid on it: The whole land is brimstone, salt, and burning; it is not sown, nor does it bear, nor does any grass grow there, like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeborim, which the Lord overthrew in His anger and His wrath”, Deuteronomy 29:22-23.

Isaiah also compared Jerusalem to Sodom and Gomorrah, when he condemned it for its bloodshed, corruption, and injustice , Isaiah 1:9-23.  He also likened Babylon to the two infamous cities – “And Babylon, the glory of kingdoms, The beauty of the Chaldean’s pride will be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah”, Isaiah 13:19.

Likewise, Ezekiel compared the enormity of Judah’s iniquities to Sodom, 16:48-51.  Jeremiah compared the wicked prophets of Jerusalem to Sodom and Gomorrah, 23:14.  He made references to these cities in Jeremiah 49:18 and 50:40.  Amos did the same, 4:11.  While on earth, Jesus made reference to these cities in Matthew 10:15 and Mark 6:11.  Paul, Peter and Jude also made reference to the sinful conduct of Sodom and Gomorrah, Romans 9:29, II Peter 2:6, Jude 7.

Is America reaching a point where it could be compared to Sodom and Gomorrah?  Again, these cities depict a nation or a society at its worst.  What we are seeing before our eyes in this country reminds us of Isaiah 5:20:  “Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; Who put darkness for light, and light for darkness.” Yes, we all need to be praying for this nation and her leaders.  “Righteousness exalts a nation, But sin is a reproach to any people”, Proverbs 14:34.

If we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.
