Jesus is coming again! This is one of the greatest promises that we have in the Word of God. We don’t know when, but must be ready at all times. The Bible teaches faithfulness. We are to be active in our service to the Risen Lord. We are in the Lord’s army for the “duration.” Our service to Him has both earthly and eternal ramifications. The Lord expects us to be in His service for the duration, not just when it is convenient.
In 2 Timothy 4:5-8, Paul gives what some have called his “Last Will and Testament.” Probably the whole chapter could be thus classified. He knows his “earthly race” is nearing its end so he wants to encourage Timothy to remain faithful to the cause of Christ.
In 2 Tim. 4:1-4 Paul has stressed the fact that all of us must be consistent in our faith and in our preaching and teaching. We must stand upon the Word of God at all times. He says that some are departing from the faith and following false teachers. He tells us to remain true. These verse are the background for 2 Tim. 4:5-8. Timothy, as are all of us, is commanded to not follow the false teachers but stand faithful to God.
We want to break down these verses. This series of articles shows how all of us can remain faithful and encourage others to do the same.
