LOUISE C. WELLS’ (1921 – 2012) homegoing was celebrated on Monday, July 23rd at the Neurath-Schoppenhorst Funeral Home on West Market Street in Louisville, Kentucky. What a testimony her ninety years were as she served the Lord whom she adored.

She was born in Arkansas as Louise Covey, her family moving to Louisville when she was nine years old. Her parents enrolled her in the Portland Christian School from which she graduated. Her investment in the school as well as Portland Church of Christ continued over the rest of her four score and ten year long life.

At her memorial service several who had lived in the Portland area spoke of her light that continuously shone in her neighborhood. She reached out to those around her always spreading the love of the Lord with her good works. And with her teaching and testimony she added souls to His kingdom.

She loved the Portland Ave. Church of Christ and faithfully attended throughout her life. She bought up every opportunity to fellowship with other believers and be filled with the Word. At ninety years old she was still attending the Ladies Retreat. She endeared herself to the children at Portland who called her “The Candy Lady.” She was always giving out sweet treats as was attested by the basket of candy at the head of her casket.

She was truly a student of the Word. She was a frequent student in many of the School of Biblical Studies classes when she was well past eighty years old. And she did an excellent job of keeping the teachers on their toes being so well grounded in the Word.

And what a worker she was. She ran the Word and Work office several doors down from the church and school for many years. She could find and had read most of the publications of our Church of Christ ministers and writers. What a blessing her work, time and efforts were in spreading the Word. Her influence will be sorely missed.

We extend our heartfelt sympathy to her daughter Bev Flora and Bev’s husband Ron. Also to her two surviving sisters Alene Houtz and Sarah Jean Browning as well as four grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. We will miss her but what a legacy she has left behind!

THE 65th ANNUAL KENTUCKY-INDIAND FELLOWSHIP is now history. And what a blessing and challenge the messages based on “No Other Name – the Total Authority of Christ” were to each one attending. The keynote speaker, Burt Jones, did an excellent job of alerting us to the threats and dangers of the Islam religion. Especially enlightening were the men’s sessions with him and the women’s sessions with his secretary, Barbara Jones. What a challenge we have today in our country to be light spreading the name of Jesus – the only name by which we must be saved!

We were also blessed to be using the Portland’s new campus on Westport Road. Monday night was a challenge with both the air and PA system. But by Tuesday all was well. We are grateful to Portland for opening up their facilities to us as they prepare for a new school year. We are also grateful for each church that provided the plentiful and delicious lunches. And to the fellowship committee who put together such an inspiring week.
